A Thornhill family run farm is in the running for a top industry award for diversification.

The Steedmans have been announced as finalists in the British Farming Awards for their innovative holiday park, Mains Farm Wigwams – home to the UK’s only Royal Navy Sea King glamping pod.

The Thornhill based farm is one of only four across the UK to be shortlisted for the prestigious title of Diversification Innovator of the Year.

Reacting to the announcement, Martyn Steedman said: “We’d love to land this award to recognise all our hard work transforming the helicopter from a Royal Navy relic to a one of a kind holiday home. We’ve created a truly unique experience for visitors to Scotland and we’re already working on our next project, converting a 1960s high winged plane! By constantly innovating we’re attracting tourists from all over the world, which is great news for the rural economy and local jobs!”

Now entering its 7th year, the British Farming Awards has become a nationally recognised event which has celebrated and showcased hundreds of farmers for their fantastic work across the sector.

The 2019 winners will be announced at the National Conference in Birmingham on Thursday 17 October.
